Spring Cleaning Tips: How to Clean Different Couch Upholsteries
Spring is in the air, and for many, that means another round of spring cleaning. Whether you’re simply giving your home a deep clean or trying to remove tricky stains from your couch upholstery, this advice can help keep your couch looking great for years to come.
How to Clean an Upholstery Couch?
Unless you have an unexpected spill, you likely don’t think much about cleaning your couch. For general cleaning, we recommend regularly vacuuming your couch with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. This can prevent dust and lint buildup, as well as removing any pet fur or crumbs from your couch.
How to Spot Clean an Upholstery Couch?
Especially if you eat and drink on your couch, it’s inevitable that something will spill onto the upholstery. Before you start spot cleaning, consider the material from which your couch is made. Materials like microfiber, cotton, linen, and polyester stand up well to spot cleaning and will likely not require any special considerations. Simply grab a damp washcloth and a mild detergent and blot the area softly, avoiding rubbing, which can spread the stain. If you’re dealing with a particularly stubborn substance like red wine or grease, consider researching specific instructions.
How to Spot Clean Velvet Upholstery?
Velvet furniture is one of the hottest interior design trends of 2019, and while it’s no longer as delicate as it once was, spot cleaning velvet upholstery requires a slightly more in-depth cleaning method. Dab up any remaining liquid and remove any food debris remaining on the velvet. Mix water and a mild detergent into a small bucket until it becomes sudsy. Then use the soaked cloth to blot the stain until it disappears. With velvet upholstery, it’s incredibly important for the material to dry quickly, so once the stain is removed, use a hair dryer or fan to accelerate the drying process. Keep in mind that some velvet upholstery might require professional cleaning to prevent crushing the fabric.
How to Spot Clean Leather Upholstery?
Leather furniture is incredibly popular both because of its durability and sophisticated style. When cleaning small stains from leather upholstery, choose a moisturizing soap like Dove and lather onto the sofa with a soft, damp cloth. It’s important not to overwet the leather, which can cause lasting damage. Instead, buff the leather with a soapy cloth, letting the soap condition the leather and avoid rinsing.
Before cleaning any couch upholstery, be sure to consider any special instructions listed on the furniture. Some materials are trickier to clean, and some stains are much more stubborn than others.
